ISO Marine Fuel Specification development

ISO Marine Fuel Specification development

Marine fuel is a global product and the specifications are developed by the International Standardisation Organisation (ISO) with worldwide representation.  The ISO/TC 28/ SC 4/ WG 6 Marine fuels group responsible for the global Marine fuel standard ISO 8217 met in Lisbon on 12-13 March 2019.

The group addresses the possible specification implications after the introduction of low sulphur bunker fuel from 1 January 2020. As an interim measure, a guidance document addressing the quality considerations for 0.5 % Sulphur bunker fuel, PAS 23263 will be released. This document shall be used in conjunction with the ISO 8217 standard. Because of the expected change in composition of the bunker fuel, the main concern is the stability and compatibility especially of blends on board ships. CIMAC, the International Council on Combustion Engines is developing in parallel a practical guidance document for ship owners.
